PAINTING BEYOND THE BRUSH

Ella-V-Ella is a Salvadoran and Mexican American mixed-media textile artist and painter, born and raised in Los Angeles. Her work combines paint, fabric, embroidery, appliqué, quilting, and drawing to create layered figurative works that blur the boundaries between painting and textiles. She treats each material as an equal part of the image, creating one-of-a-kind works that are both tactile and deeply personal.

Painting has never ended with the brush.

The work develops through an ongoing conversation between image, material, and process. Rather than starting with a commitment to a single medium, each piece evolves through the relationships that emerge as it is made. Through that process, paint, fabric, embroidery, appliqué, quilting, and drawing become equal parts of the same visual language, each shaping the work alongside the others. The process remains visible throughout the work. Cut edges, layered materials, and visible stitches are left intact because they are part of the work’s visual language, not details to be hidden.

Fabric, paint, thread, and drawn marks each contribute something distinct to the emotional and visual language of the work. Together, they create works that invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover meaning through both image and material.
